True to Yourself | MIXED MEDIA 24 x 36 in
Year: 2022
Size: 24 × 36 in
Medium: Mixed Media — Acrylic and Digital Work (Procreate)
LIMITED EDITION OF 100
Series: Tales of Joe Hueso
In True to Yourself, Joe Hueso stands immersed in a field of bone-like figures — repeated, simplified versions of himself layered across the background. They are not ghosts. They are fragments. Echoes of identity. Versions of the self built to function, perform, survive.
Created during a period of burnout, this work captures the psychological narrowing that occurs when the mind becomes overwhelmed. Vision shortens. Thinking polarizes. Everything becomes black and white. The world feels mechanical, repetitive, stripped of nuance.
The bone-like repetition reflects conformity — the pressure to blend in, to behave, to keep producing. To become another identical form in the crowd.
And yet, in the middle of that sameness, Joe chooses color.
The yellow flamingo shirt stands as a declaration of authenticity — culture, creativity, vulnerability. The red form cuts through the monotony like a pulse of life. It represents confrontation: the tension between persona and truth.
This is the moment of decision.
To remove the mask.
To face the shadow.
To stop hiding behind functional versions of yourself.
No one can untangle your internal confusion for you. The work must be done within. To stand out is not vanity — it is survival. To love yourself fully in the midst of collapse is courage.
True to Yourself is a reminder that even when surrounded by fragments of who you were, you can choose who you are becoming.
Wear your colors. Do the work. Return to yourself.
